The start of the new season was best in his career so far. Martin Švec reached his first PSA final in Odessa last month. He is currently 2nd highest ranked Czech player behind Jan Koukal who is dominating Czech squash for 18 years. There is a gap of just 5 places in PSA ranking at the moment - Koukal is ranked 151st and Švec is 156th. Švec says: "To get in front of him is a big motivation for me."
European championship is not a PSA ranking tournament but Martin Švec would like to finish ahead of Koukal and reach the top 8. Martin adds: "At least I would like to be in top 10 in Prague." He stopped his studies at the university to be able to focus full time on his squash. "I thing it was worth it now."
Where does he see a biggest change? "Mainly in my head. In the past I often lost matches when my head was not working the way it should. It doesn´t happen anymore. I am more confident. I can turn and win the matches." His goal is to reach top 100 in the world. He knows it will take a lot of work but he is looking forward to it. Maybe European championships in his home country will help him. "The draw will be very important. I wouldn´t mind to get Koukal and fight with him for the quarterfinal."
